Matthew Perry dead: Thirty years ago, nearly to this day, an event occurred that would remain in Matthew Perry's heart forever - his beloved co-star and good friend River Phoenix passed away.
This tragedy was very close to Matthew's heart, with him later writing of River as being "too beautiful for this world."
At the tender age of 23, River - the rising star of Hollywood in the early 1990s and elder brother of movie icon Joaquin Phoenix - had his life tragically cut short.
The Viper Room, owned by Johnny Depp in West Hollywood, was the backdrop to this tragedy when he passed away after a cocaine and heroin overdose.
In the early hours of Halloween in 1993, a tragedy was felt around the world. The death of an individual sent shockwaves through the atmosphere.
River starred alongside Matthew in "A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon," which was the latter's first film role.
At the age of 23, River had already become a household name thanks to his part in the coming-of-age movie "Stand By Me (1986)."
It was his brother Joaquin, who was 19 years old during that time, who called 911.
"He's having seizures; get over here, please, please, 'cause he's dying, please," the "Joker" actor said.
Meanwhile, as Matthew Perry settled into his apartment that night, located down the street, thoughts of his friend's death came flooding back to him.
"River was a beautiful man inside and out - too beautiful for this world, it turned out," Matthew wrote in his book"Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing" which was released last year.
"It always seems to be the talented guys who go down."
From his nearby apartment in Los Angeles on October 31, 1993, Matthew Perry heard something that immediately sent chills down his spine - screaming.
Sadly, it was on that same night that his friend, River Phoenix, passed away.
Upon hearing this news when he awoke 30 years ago, tears streamed down the "Friends" actor's face as he was only a few years older himself at this time.
Samantha Mathis, River's girlfriend that time, was reportedly with him that fateful night when he went to The Viper Room.
Fame took a toll on River as it did for his Matthew, but unlike Matthew's story, there would be no happy ending to this one.
Matthew wrote in the book about River, "He often said he wished he could just be anonymous. But he never was. When he wasn't a movie star, he was a missionary."
"There's a beauty in that - the man with the cause, the leader - but there's also a deep loneliness."
When further reminiscing about River, Matthew had to acknowledge his remarkable acting abilities.
He confessed, "River was a better actor than me. But I think I still managed to keep up our scenes - something that seems more impressive years later."
"But more important, River just looked at the world in a different way than we all did, and that made him fascinating, charismatic, and, yes, beautiful, but not in a Gap ad kinda way (though he was that, too) - in a there-is-no-one-else-in-the-world-like-him kind of way."
