L.A. Reid was accused of sexual assault and harassment by a former music executive, Drew Dixon, which resulted in the "derailment" of her career.
According to reports, Reid began sexually assaulting Dixon in 2000 after she began working at Artista Records; she named one specific instance wherein the company was having a retreat in Puerto Rico, and during that plane ride, she was left alone with the former "X Factor" judge and he allegedly sexually assaulted her the first time.
She claims that it happened a second time during a car ride with the music executive in New York City.
The documents noted that Reid "sexually harassed Ms. Dixon and refused to allow her to succeed unless she acquiesced to his demand to be alone and in close proximity to her, where he would create the opportunity to sexually assault her on two separate occasions."
L.A. Reid, Russell Simmons Involved in Sexual Assault Cases
As per Variety, Dixon also named Russell Simmons, the co-founder of Def Jam Records, in her lawsuit; she claimed that he raped her in 2017, although he is not named as a defendant in the new suit.
"I have an opportunity now to seek some degree of accountability," Dixion said in an interview about the lawsuit. "And that's really what I'm trying to do."
Dixon left Artista Records in 2022 to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School, however, during her stint at the company, she was a vice president of A&R at Artista Records, working under Clive Davis, who used to be the company's CEO.
Due to the repeated assaults, Dixon felt that Reid had derailed her career, especially after he "complained" and became "visibly irritated" with her lack of compliance.
Former Music Executive Condemns L.A. Reid
Following the lawsuit hitting headlines, Dixon's lawyer has released a statement about the Grammy Award-winning music executive.
"L.A. Reid is a known predator, who uses his singular professional power to force himself on his victims. In my case, his persistent campaign of sexual harassment and assault forced me to abandon the work I loved when I was at the top of my game in the music business, having worked my way up from internships and a job as a receptionist," the statement said.
Dixon filed the complaint under New York's Adult Survivor's Act.
I joined a coalition of brave survivors to fight for the passage of the Adult Survivors Act because trauma takes time, and I believe all victims of sexual violence should have the opportunity to pursue justice before a jury of their peers," she added in the statement.
