Lana Del Rey might be a successful musician today as she already has numerous hits and albums under her belt, but the first years of her career weren't easy as she received negative criticism and comments about her debut record; what happened?
According to Complex, the musician entered the music scene with her first album ever titled "Born to Die" which was released in 2012. At the time, Del Rey described herself as the "gangster Nancy Sinatra."
Although fans loved her project, not everyone was pleased with the album as critics started sharing negative feedback about the album and accused the singer of being "inauthentic."
Lana Del Rey Defends 'Born to Die'
The musician recently spoke in an interview with Harper's Bazaar where she looked back at the time when her album was just released and she received not-so-great comments about it.
"I think in one week, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New York Post, and New York Magazine agreed that it was the most ridiculous act that had ever come out," she said.
Regardless of the comments, Del Rey stuck to her artistry and craft as she still considers her album "100 percent authentic."
"It's just that where I was at the time was malleable in my own life-easy to, like, acquiesce. I kept rereading the idea of somebody who was feigning vulnerability," she added.
Released under Interscope Records and Polydor Records, the album was recorded from 2010 to 2011 at the Electric Lady Studios and The Cutting Room Studios in New York City.
Most of the songs' lyrics revolved around sex, love, and drugs, which was very prominent in the 1950s and 1960s Americana.
Del Rey's debut major-label record was a success as it sold 7 million copies by 2014.
Not the First Time Lana Del Rey Defended Her Album
This was not the first time Del Rey spoke about her album because she previously appeared in a cover story for Complex in 2012, where she shared her thoughts about the "inauthentic" accusations.
"If you consider the definition of authenticity, it's saying something and actually doing it," she told the outlet.
She further added that she writes her own songs and she's involved in her music videos. In addition, she also picks her producers and nothing gets released without her go signal, so everything about it was authentic.
