Keith Urban has been regarded as one of the most talented musicians in the country music genre, but he recently admitted that his life would be so much different if he didn't pursue a career in the music industry.
The musician recently appeared in an interview on the "Talking Junkies" podcast along with host Criss Angel.
During the conversation, the host asked him what he would be doing in the present if he never became a musician. He answered honestly, saying: "I'd be in jail, probably."
He clarified that he started out as a musician early on, in 1988 to be exact. At the time, he looked up to musicians like John Mellencamp. His career wasn't easy at first because he struggled with his identity as he began to question whether he's under the genre of country or rock.
"It was the collision of all these things that, prior to going to that concert that night, I'd been like 'Man, am I country or am I rock? I don't know what I am, what I'm supposed to be doing,'" he said.
Keith Urban Addiction Problems
In a 2022 interview with The Times, Keith Urban reflected on his problems with alcohol and drug addiction which happened during the early days of his career wherein he would take cocaine as a coping mechanism.
"I don't talk a lot about it because I love my audience being able to just come and have a great time. I've nothing against drugs or alcohol. Everyone does what they want to do to have a great time," he said.
He also noted in the interview that he grew up in an alcoholic environment as his father was a constant drinker and it took him a long time to realize that he was "wired the same."
How Did Keith Urban Recover?
According to People Magazine, the country singer decided to get help and underwent a rehabilitation program in 1998, years before he got married.
Fortunately, his wife Nicole Kidman helped him get through his problems with addiction. He expressed his gratitude through a song titled "Thank You."
"I thank you for my life / And I thank god for grace and mercy / And that you became my wife," he sang in the song.
