The 2023 Soul Train Awards awarded SZA with the most recognition of the night - winning the top prizes of the night! This might be a good precursor to the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards where SZA is the most nominated artist of the night with nine nominations.
Usher follows suit with three Soul Train awards, and Victoria Monét with two. Notably, this is the sixth consecutive year that a female artist won Album of the Year since 2018.

Although Janelle Monae was nominated, she was shut out, along with Burna Boy and Chris Brown. Monae, however, received the Spirit of the Soul Award, an award which was renamed this year from Lady of Soul to honor Monae's sexuality, who identifies as a non-binary. T-Pain was recognized that night too with the Legend Award.
Despite her controversies with her family, Keke Palmer hosted the show enthusiastically. She recently filed a temporary restraining order (and was eventually granted) against her boyfriend, Darius Jackson, for being emotionally and physically abusive towards her.
