Daddy Yankee is retiring from the music industry--for good, it seems.
The "Gasolina" hitmaker shared that he will be pursuing his faith right after he completes his highly anticipated farewell tour, "La Meta" (The Goal).
"Tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him," the rapper wrote in an Instagram post.
"For many years I've tried filling a hole in my life that no one could fill. I tried finding a purpose, on many occasions, it seemed as if I was happy, but something was missing for me to feel complete."
Yankee, born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, has been in the music scene since the mid-1990s. He rose to prominence with the release of his 2004 song, "Gasolina," which resulted in people dubbing him as the King of Reggaeton.
Daddy Yankee Follows His Faith
According to reports, Yankee continued his speech by reflecting on his music career, and his mental health.
"I took note of something the Bible says," the Puerto Rican rapper continued. "'What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?'"
He also noted that he will be using his platform for his cause; "the tools that I have in my possession such as music, social networks, platforms, a microphone - everything that Jesus gave me - for his kingdom."
Daddy Yankee, Little Richard, Brian Welch Trade Stage For Church
As per the BBC, Yankee is not the first artist to leave the stage for a new life in the Church.
Other artists like Al Green, Cat Stevens or Yusuf, Ma$e, Little Richard, and guitarist Brian Welch have also left music in pursuit of their faith.
Al Green established the Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis, Stevens devoted his life to Islam, Ma$e now leads a church in Atlanta, and Little Richard enrolled in a theological school in Alabama, while Welch quit music to get baptized in the Jordan River and is now building orphanages in India.
Yankee did not reveal exactly what he plans to do after his retirement, however, it is coming relatively soon, as his tour will be completed by December 2023.
