Morgan Wallen had an incredible 2023. His album, "One Thing At A Time" has smashed several records this year, being the biggest album of the 2020 decade.

However, Wallen has been pretty reclusive in giving out interviews in the past year as he has faced several controversies including his use of racial slurs.

Now, the country superstar has finally opened up to his side.

Morgan Wallen 'Racial Slur' Explained

In 2021, Morgan Wallen was plagued with backlash and scrutiny after a video of him saying a racial slur went viral online. Using the n-word, a neighbor captured him without his knowledge after being intoxicated.

Speaking to Billboard about the encounter, Wallen reflected on the rather defining moment of his career.

"There's no excuse. I've never made an excuse. I never will make an excuse," he said about the issue. "I've talked to a lot of people, heard stories [about] things that I would have never thought about because I wasn't the one going through it."

At the time, Wallen issued an apology for his remarks.

"I appreciate those who still see something in me and have defended me. But for today, please don't. I was wrong. It's on me to take ownership of this and I fully accept any penalties I'm facing. The timing of my return is solely upon me and the work I put in," he said at the time.

Despite his humility, Wallen had accepted the criticisms that were thrown at him. Reflecting on the issue, he said this in the 2023 interview:

"And I think, for me, in my heart I was never that guy that people were portraying me to be, so there was a little bit of like, 'Damn, I'm kind of actually mad about this a little bit because I know I shouldn't have said this, but I'm really not that guy.' I put myself in just such a sh-t spot, you know? Like, 'You really messed up here, guy.'"

According to Wallen, if he was that guy, he wouldn't have "cared" at all or apologized to the wrongdoing.

Morgan Wallen Issue Affected His Grammy Chances?

Despite having a massive year, Morgan Wallen has been shut out of any nominations at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Although his smash hit, "Last Night" was nominated for Best Country Song, only the songwriters will receive the award. Given the fact that he's not the songwriter, he wouldn't receive the recognition.

Many speculate that Grammy voters have shunned Wallen out of any chances because of his damning controversy.
