Selena Gomez has been crowned as this year's Most Popular Artist on TikTok, but her comments are filled with vitriol and hate from netizens.
The singer slash beauty mogul has over 60 million followers on the video-sharing application and is considered the second most popular artsit in the world (second to Kim Loaiza, and above KPOP girl group BLACKPINK), reports noted.
However, Gomez has been engtangled in series of controversies this year, including her "apathetic" and "out of touch" statement about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as her years-long drama with Justin and Hailey Bieber.
An X (formerly known as Twitter) account that goes by the username Selena Gomez Charts, wrote: "After spending the entire year attacking Hailey Bieber and causing the biggest hate train on a woman this year, Selena Gomez is crowned TikTok's most popular artist of 2023 in the US."
Several netizens echoed the account's sentiments and wrote: "No Bieber, no clout as usual."
"This year I figured out why Selena's fans pushed this fake narrative about Hailey being a 'copycat'-it's because they wanted to hide what they've always known about their fave," another added.
"I mean, not surprised at all, considering her victim complex turned the whole world against Hailey and her fans subjected hailey to several death threats."
Selena Gomez Takes Social Media Hiatus
Gomez has taken several breaks from the social media scene this year, and she has returned unofficially several times, to drop a video or comment on someone else's video, as well.
However, what sparked the ire of netizens was her statement via her Instagram Story about the terrorist attacks in Palestine.
"I've been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that's going on in the world," the "Rare" singer wrote in an Instagram Story post.
"[...] I'm sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag," she continued. "I just can't stand by innocent people getting hurt. That's what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won't. Love, Selena."
She later added a second Instagram Story: "Having a sister everyday has made me tragically sick. I would do anything for children and innocent lives."
Netizens criticized Gomez for making the issue about herself, and scoffed at her statement, noting that she is the most followed person on Instagram and her platform can reach hundreds of millions of people.
Selena Gomez Vs. Hailey Bieber
The alleged years' long debacle between Gomez and the "Baby" singer's wife has come to a head this year when Gomez commented about a video showing Bieber fake-gagging when Taylor Swift was mentioned during an event.
"So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game," the singer commented.
This led to a massive hate train that was directed towards Bieber, and while Gomez tried to quell her fans' rage by telling them that she is fine and did not mean any harm.
Netizens are now switching up on Gomez, and beginning to take Bieber's side, claiming that the singer played the victim.
