The cause of death of Taylor Swift's fan who died before her Eras Tour show in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been determined.
A Swiftie, identified as Ana Clara Benevides Machado, died in November after collapsing before the show. Initial reports said she lost consciousness due to high temperature in the city and received first-aid treatment at a medical tent at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos stadium before she was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead an hour later.
How Did the Swiftie Die?
Media outlets said she died from cardiac arrest, but the official forensics report recently obtained by the Associated Press revealed that Benevides suffered from heat exhaustion.
On that day, the temperature in the city was about 40 degrees Celsius. Other attendees blamed the organizers for not delivering enough water supplies and forbidding them to take their own water.
Rio's Forensic Medical Institute's report added that Benevides' heat exposure led to her cardiac arrest. She did not have preexisting conditions or other potential triggers that could have contributed to her passing.
It added that the Swiftie had serious "compromised of her lungs and sudden death" because of the temperature.
On the other hand, the Eras Tour organizer T4F issued a statement reiterating that the company followed the "best practices," distributed water to fans and denied not allowing people to bring their own water to the venue.
"[Benevides] was promptly cared for by members of a rescue team and sent (to the hospital) in an intensive-care unit ambulance," the company shared. "In our 40 years in the business, this company had never registered a tragic episode" like Benevides' death due to extreme heat, T4F said.
Following the tragedy, the public prosecutor launched a criminal investigation and would call the organizers to testify once it analyzed the forensics report.
Meanwhile, Benevides' father, José Weiny Machado, commented on the findings and told G1 he never doubted that the cause of her death was due to her heat.
"Ana Clara's family wants to wait until the investigations are finished to study what will unfold to punish those responsible in the criminal case and seek the necessary legal actions to claim for damages," his lawyer, João Paulo Sales Delmondes, continued, per AP.
