Fantasia won the hearts of many, including the judges of "American Idol" Season 3.

However, while many would think that she had been living the life of a celebrity after winning, it's actually the opposite of what happened.

Fantasia Struggled After 'American Idol'

Apparently, right after Fantasia won "American Idol" she was sued by her own father over how he was portrayed in her 2006 memoir "Life is Not a Fairy Tale." She also suffered an aspirin and sleep aid overdose in 2010.

"It wasn't easy," she recalled to People Magazine. "I lost a lot. I lost everything."

Fantasia expounded on being "very very green" in the music industry when she was starting.

"You have to become a businesswoman and you link up with great business partners, but it doesn't have a lot to do with love. It took me a long time to figure that out," she confessed.

According to Fantasia, she didn't know anything about creating contracts and its value back then.

"I didn't know anything about checking your money and making sure every day your stuff was where it was supposed to be. I just trusted and believed everybody that came into my life," she painfully recalled.

Despite all the hardships that have put through her the lowest points of her life, Fantasia believes that these are necessary.

"I'm grateful for it. ... If I did not go through that, I wouldn't be the woman that I am today," she admitted.

Eventually, in 2007, Barrino revealed that she would be taking over the role of Celie on Broadway's "The Color Purple."

She then received huge acclaim on Broadway despite being a replacement. Her initial 6-month limited engagement was then extended to nine months because of how she boosted the ticket sales of the said production.

Fast forward to 2023, Fantasia earned her first Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for reprising her role as Celie in the 2023 movie adaptation of "The Color Purple" musical.

Fantasia is also predicted to earn an Oscar nomination for her masterful performance in the film.

Speaking to People Magazine, Fantasia looks back on her lows as she celebrates her recent triumphs.

"Celie and I have a lot in common when it comes to family situations, losing things and feeling ugly and unseen," she told the publication. "This feels like God's promises, they're finally coming to power," she says. "I'm a fan of the Book of Job in the Bible. Job lost everything. And so did I."
