Taylor Swift is one of the most successful songwriters of this generation. She has intricately and eloquently talked about the most distinct feelings and emotions in the world and translated them into beautiful melodies.
While that is a laudable feat on its own, it seemed to be also the cause of her unpopularity in high school.
Taylor Swift Hated In High School
A TikTok video has gone viral on social media where Jessica McLane, who was a freshman then when Taylor Swift was a senior at Hendersonville High School in Nashville, Tennessee back in 2006.
"I went to the same high school as Taylor Swift, we grew up in the same town," she revealed in the video. "When she first started becoming super successful, most people hated her. Keep in mind, these are her peers, this isn't, like, just random people on the internet. There were not a lot of people in high school who had nice things to say about her ... There were general rumours about her being b***hy. [People would say], "She said this, she said that, she was mean."'
In 2006, Taylor Swift released her self-titled debut album which essentially catapulted her into nationwide popularity and attention.
McLane then described that many of her classmates were "jealous" of her and would even spread rumors about her.
"Jealousy was definitely a thing," she said. "The 16, 17-year-olds who were trying to have a career in music at Hendersonville were playing downtown or at the local coffee shop, not winning awards. It's not that these people weren't talented, it's just that most people don't make it. Also, back then, Taylor didn't have as good of control over her voice as she does now, so there were a lot of people in high school who [felt they] were vocally a lot better."
Swift has been praised by critics and fans for her vocal growth, control, and maturity, comparing her voice on her original albums to the re-recorded ones.

Taylor Swift Served The Ultimate Clapback
Elsewhere on McLane's claims, she said that the boys who had inspired Swift to write her earlier songs were fuming because they had a hit song about them being a bad boyfriend.
"As we all know, 2009 is the year that she killed the game. She invited us to the CMAs to say f**k you," McLane claimed. "And we deserved it. So to Taylor, touché, that was a good one," she admitted in the viral clip.
