Ice Cube announced the biggest hip-hop news of the summer as N.W.A. will apparently reunite in some form for the BET Experience show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 27. Police Use Tear Gas on Rioters at Summer Jam After Tickets Sell Out
Summer Jam has continued to increase its reputation as one of the biggest events in hip-hop, and unfortunately that popularity led to police being called in to quell minor rioting at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey this weekend. Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown and Big Sean were among the big names on the lineup, which attracted a sellout crowd...which left those without a ticket in a bad mood. -
Liam Gallagher and The Who's Roger Daltrey Forming Supergroup?
Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and The Who's Roger Daltrey are apparently forming a supergroup for a television performance this week, according to reports from British publications. TFI Friday, an entertainment show broadcast in the UK during the late '90s, is coming back for a one-off reunion episode and has booked a number of big musical guests, not the least of which is the unnamed collaboration of the vocalists for two of the biggest bands in British history. -
'Fun Home' and 'The King and I' Win Big, Josh Groban Performs at Tony Awards
'Fun Home,' 'The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time' and 'The King and I' were among the big winners at last night's Tony Awards, taking home prizes for the best theatre in New York. The first of those plays, which won the night's "big" big award for Best Musical, was the first in the history of the show to win that prize and be written entirely by women. Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron wrote the hit, which focuses on a daughter and an in-the-closet father dealing with their homosexuality, also focusing on the funeral home they run. -
Billboard Hot 100 vs. Official Charts Company: Mariah Carey, Wiz Khalifa and 40 Years of No. 1s
Few people realize just how different the music across the pond is from that we listen to in America, that the Hot 100 doesn't exist in the UK, and that its equivalent to our singles chart doesn't just feature a whole bunch of American artists with even more One Direction and Ellie Goulding tracks. Music Times is looking back at the last five decades of music, and at the no. 1 hits on April 2 every ten years on the spot, going back to 1975. The ultimate contest, of course, is which country has better taste. Last month the win went to the UK in the best-of-five showdown. This month features Wiz Khalifa, Jason Derulo, Mariah Carey and more in the field. -
Celebrate Donut Day with J Dilla, Tori Amos, Parquet Courts and More
Homer Simpson and those like him are stoked for National Donut Day, especially as it falls on a Friday...a perfect introduction to the weekend. Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Tim Horton's and other retailers of the decentralized pastries are all offering special deals on their popular products. So go take care of that need...but when you get back, check out this list of music that focuses on the most American of breakfast staples (indeed, many culinary historians suggest that Dutch immigrants invented the pastry in the United States). Tori Amos, RiFF RaFF and, of course, J Dilla, make appearances. -
Snarky Puppy Goes Big with Metropole Orkest on Live Album 'Sylva'
Society always celebrates the records that top the Billboard 200 album chart. Back of The Billboards is a Music Times weekly segment that looks at the opposite end: the new record that finished closest to the back of the Billboard 200 for the previous week. We hope to give a fighting chance to the bands you haven't heard of. This week we look at 'Sylva,' a live collaboration between jazz fusion group Snarky Puppy with the Dutch Metropole Orkest. -

Secret Solstice $200,000 Ticket MIGHT Get You Private Wu-Tang Show. Maybe.
Several publications have already pointed out the growing problem of V.I.P. sections at music festivals but the Secret Solstice in Reykjavik, Iceland, is looking to put all other exclusive music experiences to shame with what it's calling "the world's most expensive festival ticket." The asking price? $200,000. -
Stephen Colbert Names Jon Batiste as Bandleader for 'Late Show'
Stephen Colbert and CBS made a big announcement yesterday, naming Jon Batiste as his bandleader for the Late Show when the comedian debuts on September 8. It's too early to make David Letterman comparisons, but if Colbert and Batiste have a relationship as friendly as the former Late Show host and Paul Shaffer, we'll be seeing a lot of the jazz musician for years to come. -
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian Shutting Down Disneyland for North's Birthday Party
The over-the-top nature of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's life together has climbed to another level once again as news broke that the power couple will be shutting down Disneyland as part of the second birthday party for child North West. If you were looking to head to the Magic Kingdom Park in Anaheim on June 15, better change plans and head to California Adventure instead, because the resort's premiere theme park will be closed to those not invited. -
Golden State Rap Songs: E-40, Mistah F.A.B. (and Lil B?) Get Behind Warriors
Tonight the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James will go up against Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors for the first game of the NBA championship. To get revved up for the series, Music Times has assembled hip-hop songs about each of the respective teams, as few musicians get as amped for their local sports teams as rappers (the number of songs/mixtapes named "Beast Mode" after Marshawn Lynch is astounding). We'll start with the Western Conference and Golden State, representing Oakland and its hyphy hip-hoppers. And no: "CoCo" by O.T. Genasis doesn't count...regardless of how often the team sings it. -
Cleveland Rap Songs: T-Pain, Milford Jerome (and Iman Shumpert?) Get Behind Cavaliers
We'll start with the Eastern Conference and Cleveland, perhaps ground zero for the hip-hop-meets-harmony movement thanks to the city's much loved Bone Thugs. -

Beats Pill XL Recalled by Apple as Potential Burn and Fire Hazard
Apple seems to have inherited a problematic piece of machinery, as it issued a recall for Beats Pill XL speakers after it was reported that the audio equipment could potentially cause burns and fire hazards. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission cited eight cases where the battery of a Pill overheated, in some cases causing burns to the user and in other cases damaging the surface it was laying upon. -

The new script will be handled by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith, the duo between acclaimed comedies such as 'Legally Blonde,' '10 Things I Hate About You,' and 'She's The Man' -
Where Next For Third Man Records? Our Predictions: London, Austin and...Malta?
Jack White has always had his hometown Detroit's back, whether that means building baseball fields, paying off the debts of the local Masonic temple or—in this case—opening a new location for his Third Man Records. The rocker made headlines all over the nation yesterday when he announced that his label would be opening a new retail store (with office space) in Michigan, expanding from its current headquarters in Nashville. It got us at Music Times wondering, where is he likely to expand to next? Here are five cities that may be the next place to open a Third Man Records location (hint: New York City ain't one of them. White noted recently that he dislikes the city strongly). -
5 Incredible Transgender Musicians: Wendy Carlos, Antony, Laura Jane Grace and More
The world has been fixed on Caitlyn Jenner this week, after the former Olympic champion and current Keeping Up With The Kardashians star revealed her new feminine identity on the cover of Vanity Fair this week. News that might have provoked shock in recent years, and even months, was greeted largely with acceptance and praise. Hopefully this will help usher in a new era where transgender individuals will be acknowledged simply as human beings. Music Times hopes to help by saluting musicians such as these, who are far more notable for the music they produce than the gender they represent. -
A$AP Rocky No. 1 on Billboard 200 Again; Boosie BadAzz, Hillsong United Follow
Another hip-hop performer takes the top spot on the Billboard 200 with a surprise album as A$AP Rocky and At.Long.Last.A$AP debuts with 146,000 equivalent units in its first week. That may seem like more than his last album, Long.Live.A$AP (which also debuted at no. 1), however that album opened with 139,000 actual copies sold, while the new Billboard metrics also take single downloads and streams into consideration. In that light, A.L.L.A. only sold 117,000 copies. Of course, week two could also be strong due to the surprise nature of the release. -

Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Travis Barker and More: Face and Head Tattoos in Music
Young Thug shocked the world when he revealed that he had gotten an ice cream cone tattooed on his face in tribute to Gucci Mane. "Shocked" might be a bit of a stretch, considering that the rapper has been on a tear of unpredictable behavior since the release of his Barter 6 album. First he tried to cop the name Tha Carter 6 from Lil Wayne (and in an "unrelated" incident, his road manager was just arrested for allegedly shooting at Weezy's tour bus). The he got the "tribute" tattoo. What next? Will he start wearing clocks on chains as a "tribute" to Flava Flav? Anyway, all we have right now is that Young Thug got some fresh ink, and it's on his face. Here are six other prominent musicians that have used their heads as showcases for questionable art installations. -
Ranking New Wave Vocalist Solo Debuts: Sting, Debbie Harry, David Byrne and More
On this date 30 years ago, Sting released his first solo album—The Dream of The Blue Turtles—after the inevitable split of the feuding Police. Some band vocalists have the chops to make it on their own, and some don't. Based on how Turtles did, we'd say that the bassist was doing alright, and since then he's been nominated as a solo performer for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...so it seems both fans and critics have taken a liking. You can argue that Sting's solo debut has nothing on Synchronicity, The Police's last album (and tough competition), but it deserved kudos nevertheless. Music Times looked at the first album from a number of other New Wave vocalists and ranked them, from best to "shoulda never left." Check out individual releases from David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Ric Ocasek and more.
