The Beach Boys' surviving members will tell their story in the upcoming documentary about the group.
Formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, Calif., The Beach Boys have maintained their title as one of the most successful bands in the world despite the losses they faced over the years. After announcing their book, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys, the group's surviving members -- Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston -- will appear in a new documentary simply titled The Beach Boys.
The Beach Boys Documentary Synopsis: What Is It All About?
In the synopsis shared by ABC News, The Beach Boys' creators said the upcoming documentary would be "a celebration of the legendary band that revolutionized pop music, and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, captivating fans for generations and generations to come."
The official synopsis added that the documentary would look back at the band members' family beginnings and would include never-before-seen footage and interviews of the surviving members.
Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny will direct the documentary based on the script written by Mark Monroe.
"I grew up with the Beach Boys, whose songs and fantastic harmonies created the California dream," Marshall said in an interview with GoodMorningAmerica.com. "Their albums had a huge impact on the music world and I've always been fascinated about how all that came about."
When and Where To Watch The Beach Boys Documentary?
The Beach Boys will be released on Disney+ on May 24, coinciding with the band's release of the limited edition blue-and-white marble vinyl edition of their 1964 album, Shut Down Vol. 2.
The Beach Boys will also release their book on April 2 via Genesis Publications. It contains rare photos and contributions from Def Leppard, David Lee Roth, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, Graham Nash, Elvis Costello and Roger McGuinn and others.
Who Will Be Featured in the Film?
Wilson, Love, Jardine, Johnston and Marks will appear in The Beach Boys documentary alongside Don Was, Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe and Ryan Tedder.
According to Variety, former members Blondie Chaplin, the late Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, and Ricky Fataar will be featured as well.
