Cody Johnson revealed a surprising tattoo during an interview on Amazon's Country Heat Weekly podcast, hosted by Amber Anderson and Kelly Sutton
It all began when Johnson claimed that he had more tattoos than fellow country singer Jelly Roll. He gave Anderson and Sutton a run down of his body art, starting with a full sleeve of tattoos on his arm.
"I go all the way up," he said as he pointed to the length of his arm. He continued, saying he has a "kinda like Irish-looking" cross on his back, which was his first tattoo. He added that he had two more on his chest. He rounded out the tour with a surprising location.
"I even have the bottom of my foot," he said. When asked how he handled the pain from getting the tattoo in such a bizarre area, he had a one word response for his hosts:
"Alcohol."
Johnson had asked his tattoo artist, Buffalo Jake, "What's one thing you've never tattooed?" The artist has done most of the singer's tattoos, and accompanies him on his tour bus. After Jake said that the one place he hadn't tattooed was the bottom of a foot, Johnson decided that was where he wanted his next ink.
"Tomorrow, after the show, we're doing it!"
"Immediate regrets, right?" asked Sutton.
"No, it actually kind of tickled," responded Johnson with a laugh.
Anderson echoed her co-host's feelings, calling the foot tattoo "her worst nightmare."
He joked that Jake is the only man that he's allowed to touch his foot as he doesn't "let people touch my feet."
When asked the meaning behind the uniquely placed tattoo, Johnson took a deep breath before explaining that it is a reference to his favorite song by Waylon Jennings, a key figure from the "outlaw movement" of 1970s country music.
"I've always been different with one foot over the line," sings Jennings on the second verse of the track, "I've Always Been Crazy."
"If you were a carpenter, you would say, 'One foot over a line,'" he said as he drew out the lines on the table.
Johnson clarified that the tattoo "isn't really elaborate" but it's definitely "in there."
"It's in the arch," he replied when asked if the lines were on his heel. The Country Heat Weekly hosts, once again, gave a squeamish cringe at the idea of getting a tattoo on such a sensitive area of the body.
"I forget it's there," he admitted, "I'll get out of the shower and I'm drying off and I'm like, 'Whoa! What is...Oh, I remember that."
Johnson is nominated for four Academy of Country Music Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year. Song of the Year and Visual Media of the Year. He won both Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year at the 2022 Country Music Association Awards for his song "Til You Can't." He released his latest single, "Dirt Cheap," earlier this year.
