Eddie Vedder's latest interview sheds light on some of the intense moments that occurred during the creation of Pearl Jam's successful album, "Dark Matter." Despite its triumphs, Vedder confessed to facing challenges behind the scenes, particularly with producer Andrew Watt.
The musician recently spoke to Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe to reflect on the musical process of their latest album, saying there was a point when producer Andrew Watt started pissing him off.
"And then I'd try to do something really good, just to say like, 'F*** you. Back off,'" he recalled.
There was also one moment when he told his musical collaborator he needed to take the night off to sleep or do something, as they had been working on the project for 15 days already.
Eddie Vedder, Andrew Watt Had Heated Moments While Recording 'Dark Matter'
In a new song with Mike McCready, Vedder said he asked the producer to work on it, but he remembered the answer that he got from him: "I get it. I totally get it... I'm with you. I will stay an extra three weeks, whatever it takes." (via Loudwrite)
The singer told his collaborator that although everything was going well at the time, he felt that something was "going to break here."
Watt later offered the Pearl Jam member a deal: He would go home by 10 o'clock, but first, he needed to get the bridge on one song and an outro on the other.
Vedder worked on it for only 10 minutes as he wanted to leave to have eight hours to himself.
Eddie Vedder Doesn't Consider Those Heated Moments as Negative
Even though the two musicians had heated moments, Eddie Vedder didn't consider those as negative, explaining that he didn't have to apologize to Watt.
"Maybe when you're starting to feel a little shaky and vulnerable or whatever, that could be the opening to access some of the deeper s*** that might be normally closed," he remembered.
He added that being on the edge at the time ended up being helpful for both of them, as they were able to work their issues through, and he felt that it's always been in them.
Vedder was thankful for Watt, as he gave Pearl Jam "a fire," and he noted that it felt good being "pushed." He also said that some things would have happened differently if he hadn't been there.
