Kerry King wanted to continue Slayer's legacy by releasing new music. However, his band mates had other ideas.
The guitarist recently told Revolver that he wrote a few songs for Slayer, but he later found out that the group was retiring in 2019.
"I had every intention of making another Slayer record," he said, but then explained that his bandmate, Tom Araya, did an interview where he was asked about the band's next album.
Araya reportedly answered: "'I don't know, I gotta talk to Kerry before we start working on the next record.'" He made it clear that his bandmate didn't want to release a new album anymore as he wanted to retire.
When King found out about his band's next move, he was "hurt," but he had a lot of work to do. To move forward, the guitarist said he played as best as he could on their remaining shows at the time.
Despite the retirement, there was also a positive side: The musician said all of the songs he had been writing for Slayer belong to him now.
King is now focused on his solo career. His debut studio album, From Hell I Rise, will be released on Friday (May 17).
"I just started my new career, and my career is just taking off," he said, noting that he's already working on songs for his next album.
Slayer will reunite this year despite retiring in 2019. They're set to appear at festivals like Louder Than Life, Riot Fest and Aftershock.
Even though they will take the stage again, King assured fans in an interview with Metal Hammer that they will not go on tour or even release albums in the future, saying their upcoming shows will only be a celebration of them marking five years after their final concerts.
Regarding his relationshipo with Araya, the guitarist said that although they haven't talked to each other for years, there was no bad blood between them and he's not angry with his bandmate; they're just "very different people."
