For someone who doesn't typically do sequels, Meryl Steep has given fans some hope after she expressed her desire to return to reprise her character in the movie musical Mamma Mia!
When Deadline had cornered Streep at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the award-winning actress responded to the question about including her in a possible Mamma Mia! 3.
"I don't know how they're going to do it. They have an idea. I haven't heard it yet but it's in [my diary] and I'm going to hear about it pretty soon," Streep said.
When asked if she would be willing to do it again, Streep said: "Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it."
The publication noted that a casting meeting for the film is "imminent." Meanwhile, Streep's agent, who was beside her during the interview, doubled down on the hopes of the new movie, saying, "We're optimistic about it."
Notably, Streep's character in the second film, Donna Sheridan, passed away. Even though many of the cast returned, the Oscar-winning actress did not.
In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Streep spoke about what she thinks of possibly returning for the third film.
"I'm up for anything. I'll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there's an idea that excites me, I'm totally there," Streep revealed.
However, a huge conflict on Streep's return would be how she would be introduced again as a character.
"I told [producer Judy Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I'm into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died," she added.
Mamma Mia! creator Judy Cramer told Entertainment Weekly that killing off Streep's character in the second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was necessary because Streep was "hesitant about doing another film because she doesn't typically do sequels."
Mamma Mia! featured songs from the pop group ABBA, with additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. The first film has musical performances of songs like "Voulez-Vous," "The Winner Takes It All," "Slipping Through My Fingers," "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)," and "Dancing Queen."
Meanwhile, the second film had "I've Been Waiting for You," "Super Trouper," "Why Did It Have to Be Me?," "Waterloo," and more.
