The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office recently strongly disapproved of a surveillance video involving music icon Sean "Diddy" Combs and his altercation with former partner Cassie Ventura.
Despite the disturbing nature of the video, the office of District Attorney George Gascón clarified the inability to press charges, citing legal constraints related to the statute of limitations in a comprehensive statement shared on Instagram.
"We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles. We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch."
Following the officials' clarification, they indicated that in the event the reported vicious attack by Combs in 2016, as revealed by NY Post, did occur, they were "unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted."
As per legal authorities, the time limit for pursuing charges for misdemeanor assault in California stands at one year, while for felony assault, it extends to three years. Given that the incident involving Ventura, 37, and Combs, 54, transpired eight years ago, it has now exceeded the stipulated deadlines.
The statement by the DA's Office highlights the absence of a presented case by law enforcement regarding the violent attack.
They urge "anyone who has been a victim or witness to a crime to report it."
Unfortunately, the decision made by the DA sparked discontent among individuals commenting on the post despite its alignment with legal regulations. They argued that the decision was unjust and did not sit well with them.
"The Hotel had this video and never reported it to the police or didn't call the police .... should make exceptions to the statute of limitations ... she definitely deserve justice and the hotel security should be in trouble."
Another wrote, "It's time we update the statute of limitations. There's no reason whatsoever that a victim shouldn't be able to report these crimes after escaping their abusers."
Despite not facing criminal charges for the alleged assault on Ventura, Combs was sued civilly by her in November 2023. According to People magazine, the lawsuit accused him of rape, physical assault, and other troubling allegations, including claims that he coerced her into engaging in sexual activities with male escorts throughout their ten-year partnership.
Combs expressed his deep offense at Ventura's claims, having vehemently refuted the accusations against him. They settled the lawsuit quietly early this year.
