Australian pop legend Kylie Minogue had everyone’s hearts going padam-padam Sunday, the third and final day of West Hollywood’s OUTLOUD Pride festival, when in the middle of her set she announced a “big, beautiful surprise” and brought out “two incredible artists and brand-new best friends of mine”: alt-country star Orville Peck and superstar DJ Diplo.
Peck — wearing his trademark Lone Ranger mask and barbed-wire-patterned Western wear that perfectly complemented Minogue’s semi-sheer, cowgirl-fringed jumpsuit — then paraded out and announced their new “disco country” duet, explaining, “You know, we had to do a little bit of me and a little bit of Kylie!”
The new track, “Midnight Ride,” with its spaghetti-western whistle hook and Diplo’s thumping urban-cowboy club beats, had fans line-dancing on the wild West Hollywood Park grass. Despite Minogue remarking that she and Peck were “new” besties, they seemed very comfortable cuddling up to each other onstage; Peck said the song had “been in works for kind of a long time now” and they were “finally ready to share this secret.”
Peck, who played OUTLOUD’s main stage last year, is used to singing superstar duets: his new EP, Stampede: Vol. 1, features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Elton John, Noah Cyrus (who played OUTLOUD on Saturday), Allison Russell, Midland, and Nathaniel Rateliff, and he also once recorded a cover of Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson” with RuPaul’s Drag Race star Trixie Mattel (who played a DJ set at OUTLOUD on Sunday afternoon) and the hit “Legends Never Die” with another famous diva, Shania Twain.
Minogue has also dabbled in country music before, releasing the Nashville-inspired Golden album in 2018. After this queen of the rodeo and Peck performed “Midnight Ride,” she promised the audience, “You’ll be able to get that song very soon.” On Monday morning, it was announced that the single will drop this Friday, June 7.
Peck wasn’t the only surprise guest at OUTLOUD Sunday. Rising pop star Vincint brought back his friend and frequent collaborator Adam Lambert, who’d kicked off the festival Friday, for a high-energy duet of their new joint single “Another Lover”; New Orleans bounce sensation Big Freedia was joined by Macy Gray; and Diplo brought out Bebe Rexha during his own set, which took place right before Minogue’s headlining performance.
The night celebratorily ended with the City of West Hollywood’s mayor declaring June 2 “Kylie Minogue Day” and announcing that a WeHo street will be renamed Kylie Minogue Way in the pop goddess’s honor. Kylie Minogue’s full OUTLOUD setlist is below.
