Celine Dion courageously shared her battle with some health issues, revealing her dependance on a multitude of risky medications.
The award-winning singer highlighted her overwhelming medication routine, highlighting her challenges before she was officially diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome.
In a recent interview with Hoda Kotb, according to Us Weekly, Dion confessed to facing challenges with her performances due to spasms that hindered her ability to reach the high notes she is known for.
Despite seeking consultations from numerous medical professionals, the 56-year-old singer remained unable to find a definitive solution to her then-undiagnosed health issues.
On her journey to receive a diagnosis, Dion was recommended potent medications in high quantities.
The "My Heart Will Go On" singer explained, "I don't want you to think that I was taking crazy - well, they were crazy, not crazy to kill myself but crazy things to keep going. Let's put it this way. We tried a lot of things."
However, Dion knew it was a dangerous route.
She said, "Trying a lot of things when you don't know what you have can kill you."
At the recommendation of her physician, Dion began using Valium as a means to calm her body and prevent muscle spasms.
For instance, she would consume 20 milligrams of Valium before going on stage to help relax her. At the time, Dion recalled making her way from the dressing room to the backstage area and noticed a significant change. The drug's effects had dissipated quickly, indicating that her body had built up a tolerance to it over time. Consequently, her doctor gradually increased her dosage, reaching a peak of 90 milligrams.
"90 milligrams of valium a day can kill you," Dion revealed. "I needed that. It was relaxing my whole body. But for what? For two weeks? A month? ... But then you get used to it. It doesn't work anymore. More, more, more."
During the chaos of 2020, with the pandemic sweeping across the globe, Dion decided to temporarily retreat from the spotlight and shift her attention to prioritizing her well-being.
She confessed, "It was an opportunity for me to not be brave."
Unfortunately, as her condition advanced, her health deteriorated. Dion revealed how she faced difficulties moving around during this stage.
It was only after a long wait that she received a diagnosis: Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS).
Despite finally feeling relieved to finally have clarity, she feared it might mark the conclusion of her music career.
