When Miranda Lambert played a show in Corpus Christi, Texas, there was a little girl in the audience named Brooke Hester. The 7-year-old has been battling stage-4 neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that develops from immature nerve cells and is found mostly in infants in children, since she was 3 and a half.
During "Over You," the song Miranda wrote with Blake Shelton, Brooke reached towards the stage to hand Miranda a flower from her little pink cowboy hat. In the moment that their hands and eyes met, Miranda saw much more than just another fan giving her flowers - she saw Brooke's special soul and it broke her. She tried to continue singing while still holding Brooke's little hand but was overcome and couldn't do it. She finally just pointed the mic out towards the audience and let them sing for her. After the song was over, she had to wipe her eyes before going into the next tune.
Jessica, Brooke's mom, told Today.com that they were at the show because an anonymous donor had given them two tickets. She was stunned that they were front row seats. But the 17 seconds that Miranda Lambert held her daughter's hand were the most special. She said, "It was very emotional and very special. It just took my breath away when I looked up, and I got the chance to look at Miranda Lambert and thank her, as she was holding Brooke’s hand, for her complete compassion that she was demonstrating to my daughter in front of all these people. And then I just kept thinking, ‘Oh, my gosh, she’s still holding her hand, she’s still holding her hand, she’s still holding her hand!’ And she wasn’t letting go. You could just feel the love surrounding the moment."
The child who is the inspiration behind and face of Brooke's Blossoming Hope doesn't just fight for her own life; she fights for others as well (through the foundation). Brooke's Blossoming Hope is a 501(c)3 that works every day to battle the disease. Manned by an all volunteer staff, their mission is "unique in the two-fold concept of helping children with cancer directly by providing them hand crafted headwear during the difficulties of hair loss, but also by raising awareness for the serious need to both find and fund cures for pediatric cancer. Childhood Cancer is not a problem limited to the United States. Brooke’s Blossoms care packages have now reached over 13,000 children in 37 countries and 7 languages!!"
