Don't call all the buzz surrounding Taylor Swift's new album 1989 pure hype... it looks as though the numbers are about to back the "Shake It Off" singer up. According to new industry reports, Swift's fifth studio album is aiming to sell over a million copies during its first week on sale.
According to Billboard, Swift's new album is set to exceed one million copies sold during its first seven days on sale. The new album projections follow a period of growth in Swift's expected sales. Billboard notes that 1989 was first expected to sell 750,000 copies, and has steadily grown. Past projections have also included 800,000 and 900,000 figures.
But Swift is one to exceed expectations, after all.
Though one million copies sold seems like an astronomical figure for an album in 2014, the projection does not come without precedence for Swift. The singer's last two albums, Red and Speak Now also exceeded one million copies in their first weeks on sale. Red, which was released in 2012, moved 1.21 million. Speak Now (2010) sold 1.05 million copies.
Exact figures for 1989 are unknown.
More interestingly than being the third album of Swift's to debut at No. 1 with over one million copies sold, the projected sales figures for 1989 will also put Swift on track to break 2014 sales records. If it moves over one million units, 1989 will automatically be the No. 2 most-sold album of the year. It will trail only the epic soundtrack to Disney's Frozen, which has thus far sold 3.2 million copies this year.
Swift will most certainly beat another epic pop star. Beyoncé's self-titled December 2013 album has sold over 700,000 copies this year.
Official sales numbers for Swift's 1989 will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
