Flo Rida vs. Deadmau5 in the battle of the Beamz

A hot trend right now in hip-hop is to have your own headphone line. Dr. Dre and Ludacris are making healthy profits off their respective Beats by Dre and Soul lines. Flo Rida, in a new development for the rapper, decided to take things in a different direction: a portable, laser-powered remix machine called Beamz by Flo (so the title might not be that original).

The product involves a setup with four laser beams and "more than 20 interactive songs" that are "inspired" (read: not actually by) famous performers. The user can set the lasers for a variety of instruments, and then add those instruments to the song by holding their hand within the laser beam. The product description makes Beamz seem like the remix-based version of Guitar Hero, versus an actual instrument.

Except this costs $249.99, according to the product's website.

When commercials for the product first aired, producer Deadmau5 rolled his eyes at Beamz (and probably Flo Rida's tendency to remix existing beats for his own songs) via Twitter.

"Well...f---. so much for my career...the futures here. s---... save me an opening slot at least," he tweeted.

Flo didn't take too well to the disparaging of his product, and shot back with another 30-second commercial aiming for the Toronto producer. The spot features a character facing away from the camera and using the Beamz, while wearing an overly large mouse-shaped head. "Beamz. So easy even a mouse could play it" read the punch line. Deadmau5 responded with another shot at the product, but he probably didn't need to.

This Christmas, get your loved one some nice headphones, or perhaps a few good albums. Leave the Beamz on the shelf.
