In conjunction with the re-release of Diplo's debut artist album, F10RIDA, Diplo and Pitchfolk have unveiled a new avant-garde, rather trippy documentary about the making of the album and give a glimpse into the life of Thomas Wesley Pentz. Featuring a lot of random movie and TV show clips interspersed throughout the 20-minute documentary, it can be a little hard to follow, but it does provide some useful insight into the life of Diplo before he became the globetrotting, superstar producer, DJ he is today.
It was directed and edited by Brian Torres Korlofsky, Diplo's friend and former roommate. The film features clips that Diplo filmed himself and has the grainy, 90s look that would come from b-rolls. There are some sections that are NSFW, so beware.
The video takes a deeper look into Diplo's early life, including him as a vinyl DJ, and how he produced on old PC computers with massive hardware setups nearby. There is also an interesting clip of Diplo and M.I.A back in the day while they were still dating and making music together, most notably leading up to their massive hit single, "Paper Planes." She happened to not be too fond of the documentary and took to Twitter to express her feelings.
The album was signed to Big Dada Records, an imprint of Ninja Tune, and the label manager, Will Ashon, who signed the album, tells the story from his perspective of working with Diplo and chaotic nature in which it was all put together.
Diplo's F10RIDA was originally released in 2004 via Big Dada Records.
It ends with Diplo heading to a Rolling Stone cover shoot with Usher, giving a glimpse at the career achievements he was headed towards, including playing Madison Square Garden alongside Skrillex.
