Last year, Bruno Mars got the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join his Super Bowl halftime performance. There was really no need for the addition, from an aesthetic point of view, because Mars killed it on his own — but the NFL and Fox decided they needed to appeal to an older audience. This year, Katy Perry was expected to have enough firepower to perform her own gig, but the "Teenage Dream" singer just announced she is adding Lenny Kravitz to the show.
"My first special guest is going to be an incredible rock & roll icon, a guitar god," Perry told NBC's Willie Geist in an interview set to air Monday, Jan. 12, on The Today Show, via Rolling Stone.
E! reports the 30-year-old singer was pumped about the addition of Kravitz, an international sensation with two U.S. mainstream rock No. 1 hits — "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and "Fly Away" — under his belt.
"He's got so much style," Perry said. "He's the coolest. He's the king of cool. He's going to make me so much cooler that day."
Perry dropped a huge hint, too, calling Kravitz her "first special guest." She would not elaborate on who else might be showing up, but expect diversity, as the league will try to reach out to as many viewers as possible.
Kravitz has been busy over the past year. His new album, Strut, received mostly positive reviews, and he has been planning a massive tour that will begin after his Super Bowl performance.
"There's no sitting at home waiting for the royalty checks to come in," he told The Standard. "Those days are over. I'm looking forward to taking out this new music."
Perry recently spoke with AZ Central about her Arizona roots — the Super Bowl will be played Feb. 1 in Glendale.
"I've lived in a couple places in Arizona," she said. "But Scottsdale has always been a really beautiful place in my mind. I have hiked Camelback Mountain. You are talking to a Super Bowl performer who has hiked your mountain. So I know about you guys a bit."
