As he wait to see whether he'll be taking home a Grammy for Best Rap Album next month, Childish Gambino stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to perform "3005" off his Grammy-nominated album Because The Internet and "Sober" from his recent STN MTN / Kauai mixtape.
Backed by a full band, Gambino looked happy and confident as he showed off some outrageous dance moves. The addition of the backing band really gave the performances a nice jolt of intensity. Here's hoping they'll be joining him during his sub-headlining slot at Bonnaroo this summer (the lineup was announced last night).
Gambino dropped the fantastic Hiro Murai-directed video for "Sober" last week, breaking his social media silence.
The rapper had wiped all of his social media accounts clean with no explanation last month, which had some fans theorizing that it was out in solidary with online protests about police brutality stemming from the grand jury decisions not to indict the officers who killed Eric Garner and Mike Brown. Others speculated it might have had something to do with his new FX show, Atlanta, or upcoming new music. Ultimately the real reason was revealed, which was to announce the video via a countdown clock.
Gambino will go up against Iggy Azalea (The New Classic), Common (Nobody's Smiling), Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP2), Schoolboy Q (Oxymoron), and Wiz Khalifa (Blacc Hollywood) for Best Rap Album at the Grammys on Sunday, Feb. 8. He is also up for Best Rap Performance for "3005" alongside Drake ("0 To 100/ The Catch Up"), Eminem ("Rap God"), Kendrick Lamar ("i"), and Lecrae ("All I Need Is You").
