Jon Stewart went at it with former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on The Daily Show last night, Jan. 19. The discussion, which touched on the differences in city and country culture as well as Beyoncé, never got heated and was an extremely enjoyable seven minutes of television. Stewart, as always, was respectful and deliberate during his chat with the Fox News personality.
Huckabee was on the show to promote his new book God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy, but the host had other plans. Stewart first advised the politician, who recently left his Fox News show to presumably run for president in 2016, to get his job back. For some reason, Huckabee used that mindset as an example of people who he writes in his book live in the "bubbles" — cities like New York and Los Angeles — to the "bubbas" — think the heartland and middle of the country.
Stewart argues that the former Arkansas governor is saying that the people who live out in the country are better and have superior ideals than those who live in the city. Huckabee clarifies that it comes down to different perspectives. Then he makes a generalization about well-educated people thinking those who live in the "bubbas" are "nuts," adding that the "bubbas" already know about the "bubbles" because that is typically what Hollywood portrays in the movies.
The Daily Show host then brings up Jay-Z and Beyoncé as examples of Hollywood culture because Huckabee does so in his book. The politician echoes the sentiments that surfaced only a few days ago, saying Bey does not need to be "vulgar" or overly sexual with her music and performances because she is a role model to girls. Stewart fires back by showing the acceptable side of entertainment for "bubbas" — a clip of Ted Nugent performing on Huckabee's show — with him on bass — singing "Well, I make the p---y purr with the stroke of my hand / They know they gettin' it from me" from "Cat Scratch Fever."
"That ain't about bacteria," Stewart joked. "Do you see my point? You excuse that type of crudeness because you agree with his stance on firearms. You don't approve of Beyoncé because she seems alien to you. Johnny Cash shot a man just to watch him die — that's some gangsta s--t!"
