Back in 2013, the Detroit pop-punk outfit known as Fireworks requested that former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, dust off his old saxophone and play on their album. A little over a year later, the band finally received a response: no. Fireworks tweeted out an image of an email they received recently from Jenna Daley, who works for the Scheduling department for the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation.
"Thank you for inviting President Clinton to play his saxophone as part of your band's album in September of 2013. As I'm sure you can imagine, his calender is shaping up to be quite full and due to prior constraints on his schedule, he is unable to join. I want to thank you again for your outreach, and wish you the best with your ongoing album recording," Daley responded, via NME.
"We're sorry we let you all down," the band joked to fans.
Th group soldiered on without Clinton, releasing their third studio album, Oh, Common Life, in March of last year.
Clinton famously appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show (not to be confused with his recently cancelled show) back in 1992, wearing black shades and blowing his sax to Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel." He instantly became the coolest presidential candidate and went on to defeat George H.W. Bush in the election.
Hall spoke with John King about the historic moment on CNN in 2012. The anchor said that the appearance "changed politics forever" because Clinton was in a bit of trouble that year. Clinton used the performance to reach out to new voters, all while showing off his personality. Before there was campaigning via the Internet, there was Clinton and his saxophone.
"Good politicians take a risk, and Clinton took one," King added.
