First we learned that Brian Williams was suspended from NBC Nightly News, and then a few hours later Jon Stewart announced during a taping that he will be leaving The Daily Show later this year. Stewart took over the anchor desk from Craig Kilbourn in 1999 and has used sarcasm and quick wit to win over viewers while holding typical news readers and politicians accountable. His reason for leaving? Stewart explained that he feels "restless" and that the show and fans deserve better than a "restless host."
In case viewers thought he was joking, Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless later issued a statement confirming the fact that Stewart will be moving on.
"For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none. Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come. Jon will remain at the helm of The Daily Show until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family," said Ganeless.
The news of Stewart's departure has sparked more than 250 million tweets so far, and while he claims to have only ideas but no real plan for what the next chapter in his career will be, speculation has already begun.
Some are wondering whether or not NBC might actually snatch him up as a replacement for the fallen Williams on NBC Nightly News. There have been rumblings about Stewart being a serious contender when NBC was looking for a new host of Meet the Press.
If that is true, then the network must envision him in the role of a serious anchor, right?
