Modest Mouse 'The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box' Review: New Song from 'Strangers to Ourselves' Shines With Bouncy Basslines [LISTEN]

Modest Mouse is continuing to prepare for the release of its new album Strangers to Ourselves, and today (Feb. 17), the indie rockers released the album's latest track "The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box" with a splash on Reddit and a mini AMA courtesy of Isaac Brock.

"The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box" clocks in at over six minutes, but the song is filled with ferocious energy and blasted guitars. Though the music itself feels peppy enough, with a bouncing bassline and almost disco-esque keyboards, there's more bubbling beneath the surface.

In the Reddit AMA, a Modest Mouse fan, u/CatBotisCatBot pointed out the sadness of the lyrics and indicated Strangers to Ourselves probably wouldn't be the happiest album, something Brock was quick to confirm: "Bingo," he wrote about the hypothesis.

Nothing is what it seems in the world of Modest Mouse, apparently.

Despite the angst in Brock's lyrics and vocals, "The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box" is one of the strongest tracks to come from Strangers to Oursevles thus far. While it maintains the Modest Mouse signatures, with jangling bells, soaring yet melodic guitars and Brock's stressed singing, there's a distinctive bounce to "The Ground Walks" that makes it a crazy earworm. And the six minutes of the song just zoom on by.

"The Ground Walks..." is the fourth track released from Strangers to Ourselves, following lead single "Lampshades on Fire," "Coyotes" and "The Best Room." Strangers to Ourselves will be released on March 17.
