Muse confirmed the release date for its new album Drones recently. The English band's seventh album is due out June 9. Muse will share the LP's lead single "Psycho," later tonight, March 12, via YouTube. The song will be available for download as well, Rolling Stone noted. They have also shared the tracklist for the 2nd Law follow-up.
Frontman Matt Bellamy wrote about the album in a statement.
"To me, drones are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behavior with no recourse," Bellamy said. "The world is run by drones utilizing drones to turn us all into drones. Drones explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors."
Another single from the album, "Dead Inside," will be released later in March. Muse will play a handful of dates in the United Kingdom in the coming weeks. A world tour announcement is a definite possibility.
Bellamy spoke to RS in 2013 in the early stages of putting together Drones. He said the new record would be a departure from the band's previous two efforts, 2012's The 2nd Law and 2009's The Resistance.
"It will be nice to reconnect and remind ourselves of just the basics of who we are," he added.
The 2nd Law hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went to the top of other charts around the world. The album's success was fueled by singles like "Survival," "Follow Me" and "Madness." Critics gave the release mostly positive reviews.
"Truth be told, The 2nd Law superficially succeeds for the same reasons as that movie -- the whiz-bang technical effects and relentless soundtrack is overwhelming, a justification of 'you gotta spend money to make money.' The problem is that it's not any fun at all," Pitchfork wrote.
