Following Instagram tease after Instagram tease, Muse is finally giving fans a full-length taste of its new album Drones. After announcing an official release date and tracklist, today (March 12), the "Madness" band released a sample single from Drones, and they're going a little bit "Psycho."
Alongside a cinematic lyric video, Muse released the ripping "Psycho." The sludgy guitars and rolling basslines are what help to drive this song along. It's a return to a darker, more intense Muse as the band moves away from the lightness and dramatics of The 2nd Law and instead dive into the music hard and headfirst.
What helps to put "Psycho" apart from other hard rock songs is the lyrical content. Pulling from the album's title "Drones," a sergeant opens up the song asking for complete conformity from his drone man killing machine, as the solider responds with "Aye, sir!"
The phrase "Your ass belongs to me" moves into the chorus, with singer Matt Bellamy pulling into his higher range to make the otherwise cheesy phrase pack a serious punch.
The distorted vocals in this song also help to carry the groove. "I'm gonna make you / I'm gonna break you / I'm gonna make you / A f*cking psycho," a voice sings, giving the song a high militarized concept.
And it rocks so frickin' hard.
