Charli XCX has released a video for her single "Famous" off her latest album Sucker as part of the 2015 YouTube Music Awards. Ironically, the video takes down the very self-obsessed Internet culture that YouTube helped spawn. Directed by Eric Wareheim of Adult Swim's Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, the clip shows a Charli XCX fan, dressed like Charli in a Charli-themed room, trying to dance along to a Charli music video that she's watching on her cellphone. Then things take a dark, gruesome turn.
As she tries to take selfies and listen to the music at the same time, her battery life begins to die. When she can no longer look at the screen, the real world in front of her gets scary as zombies begin to surround her. Luckily she finds another screen to look through (her tablet) and things go back to being happy.
However, once that battery dies, she gets pulled by the zombies into an hellish alternate world where freaky people dance next to other Charli fans as they look through phone screens that filter out their gross reality. Because her phone is dead, she tries to plug it into a Jabba the Hutt-like man -- who has an electrical outlet as a bellybutton and selfie-sticks for fingers -- but ultimately gets electrocuted. You really need to watch it to understand.
Charli XCX's "Famous" video was one of many that premiered at the 2015 YouTube Music Awards this week. Among the other releases were FKA Twigs' video for "Glass & Patron;" Action Bronson's video for "Baby Blue;" Ed Sheeran's video for "Bloodstream;" Migos' video for "One Time;" and many more.
