Motown music secured for new UK TV musical series 'Stop! In The Name Of Love'

It looks like the UK television scape is about to get a little taste of Detroit. Today (Jan. 14), it was announced that Tony Jordan, a screenwriter with credits that include Eastenders, Life On Mars and Hustle is penning a new Motown infused TV show called Stop! In The Name Of Love.

According to The Guardian, Stop! In The Name Of Love will be a 10-part series featuring the music of Motown. Jorden was inspired to write the new show after securing the rights to use over 40 Motown classics. In case you couldn't tell, even the title of the show was taken from the massive 1965 Supremes hit "Stop In The Name Of Love."

The show will be a full-on musical, with actors singing the Motown tracks as a part of the story's dramatic arc and narrative. In an interview with The Guardian, Jordan hinted that the new show would be unlike anything that came before it, taking inspiration from Broadway musicals such as Mamma Mia! and Rock of Ages.

"No one has ever done this kind of thing on TV, full stop. I'm talking about 100 women in burqas doing 'Baby Love,' that's a big deal. I've always wanted to do a big, sexy, amazing musical for TV, something we're not seen since those old MGM musicals," he said.

So, why bring the music of Motown overseas? According to Jordan, it's to help showcase Britain's diverse, multicultural population.

"Motown was the first music that really went across the social divide, it came out of Detroit and it was the first music that brought black and white together for the first time in popular music," he said. "The Motown catalogue was important because we live in a more multicultural society than we ever have before, it feels the perfect time to do the show."

Little else is known about Stop! In The Name Of Love at this time.
