Last night, the Pearl Jam concert in Chicago underwent a rain delay for upwards of three hours. After playing only seven songs, the “Black” band had to pause the show.
Patient fans who waited out the storm were rewarded with two new songs from the band’s upcoming tenth studio album Lightning Bolt.
The first song, title track “Lightning Bolt,” is a driving rock song with a mature sense of song structure. Lead singer Eddie Vedder’s vocals have not wavered in his 20-plus years making music. The soaring rock song seems to indicate the direction Pearl Jam will go on the next record, a logical, modern rock build off their last release, 2009’s Backspacer.

The other new song debuted was “Future Days.” The acoustic ballad is quite the opposite of the thrashing “Mind Your Manners” that fans heard last week. The tender song features Vedder softly signing in his distinct, throaty baritone, a piano riff and small acoustic strumming.
