Fans of Five Seconds of Summer are mourning the loss of a founding principle of the band this week... the infamous five mark tally logo. After potentially facing a lawsuit from clothing company Undefeated, the "Permanent Vacation" band has ditched its tally marks for a new signature image.
According to Yahoo UK, Undefeated was threatening to sue 5SOS for copyright violation due to similarities between the two's logos, which feature askew tally marks.
As opposed to fighting the allegations in court, 5 Seconds of Summer side stepped a lawsuit by designing a new logo. Under pressure, the band and its team created something that caters to its younger, alternative female audience: a skull with hearts for eyes. On some merch, the skulls are modified to look like the band, and it is pretty punky cute.
But, despite the legal implications and the totally fine new logo, members of the 5SOS Fam aren't too terribly happy about the switch. As it turns out, the tally marks had a special meaning for the band and its fans. Each of the first four marks represented a band member, with the cross mark representing their fans.
But for now, it seems as though the sugar skull will live on.
