In an area-sized display, former Talking Heads front man, David Byrne, enlisted the talents color guard teams for four enthralling shows between June 22 and 23 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre and June 27 and 28 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Ten Flag-spinning expert troops spanning the country will be joined by ten various artists including, St. Vincent, Tune-Yards, Nelly Furtado and Zola Jesus for the showing of Contemporary Color.
"I got the idea for Contemporary Color when a color-guard team asked to use some instrumental music that I'd done," he explains in a video upon working with color guard troop Les Eclipses. "It was a high school team, and I just said 'Sure, no charge. Just send me a video of what you do, because I'm curious.' A month went by and they sent me a video of the national championship, and I watched it and my jaw dropped and I thought, 'I had no idea that this was going on out there.'"
The color-guard team experienced some confusion, not fully understanding Byrne's artistic motives, but nevertheless was excited to move fourth with the project. "Honestly I'm really confused by what all of this is, but he's going to write a song for us," confessed a Les Eclipses team member. Two female members were interviewed and had no previous knowledge of Byrne and his illustrious work.
Byrne's Contemporary Color will also incorporate performances by Kelis, Blood Orange's Dev Hynes, Nico Muhly with Ira Glass, Money Mark and Ad-Rock, Luscius, How to Dress Well and Bryne himself, notes Rolling Stone. The Talking Heads artist initially announced the four shows in a video where he interjects during Harfield High School's morning announcements. "Don't miss this. This is not going to happen again," Bryne states in the video.
