Today the Supreme Court made history and announced that same-sex marriage is deemed a Constitutional right, legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Among those celebrating this victory is Girls star, Lena Dunham. Although she isn't gay, she has been a strong ally for the gay community and vowed that she would never get married to her boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, until everyone could legally get married in all states. Well, Jack, it looks like its time start ring shopping!
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Lena said that she wouldn't feel right getting married unless everyone had the right to be included in that experience for themselves. She said, "The idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all...So until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it's just not something that we're gonna do." This wasn't the first time Dunham expressed her support for the LGBT community.Last year, Lena was honored with the Point Foundation Award for LGBT Advocacy, and in her acceptance speech told a story about how proud she was when her lesbian sister came out.
It's clear that the gay rights movement is something that Dunham holds very dear to her, so today when it was announced that same-sex marriages had been legalized nationwide, she took to Twitter to voice her excitement, tweeting, "Weddings are about to get a lot less boring." She later hinted to her boyfriend that the wait is over now, tweeting him, "@JackAntonoff Get on it, yo." Lena Dunham is one of the most creative people in the TV industry, so we can only imagine how exciting her wedding will be when it happens.
