Madonna made some bold comments recently about the state of women's rights. The Queen of Pop said that progress for women has been much slower than that of African-Americans and the LGBT community during an interview with Out magazine. The comments come on the heels of the release of her new album Rebel Heart. "Gay rights are way more advanced than women's rights. People are a lot more open-minded to the gay community than they are to women, period," she said. "It's moved along for the gay community, for the African-American community, but women are still just trading on their ass. To me, the last great frontier is women."
Madonna's comments were not well-received. Piers Morgan called them "idiotic" on Twitter while others sounded off.
The singer went on to talk about how much she appreciates her gay fanbase. Madonna said she never felt understood by straight men.
"Gay men understood me, and I felt comfortable around them," she added. "There was only that one problem, which is that they didn't want to have sex with me! So ... conundrum! I was like, 'How am I ever going to get a date? Maybe if I cut my hair and I lose a lot of weight, someone will mistake me for a guy and ask me out.'"
As The Guardian pointed out, Patricia Arquette made her views on the issue public earlier this year during her Oscars acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress.
"It's time for all the women in America and all the men who love women and all the gay people and all the people of color that we've fought for, to fight for us now," she said.
