Beck is about to enter into the Morning Phase of his career. Eight days before his 12th studio album and the Sea Change soulmate is set to drop, the indie rock weirdo is streaming the record in full on NPR.
Though markedly different from Sea Change in its maturity and layers of sound, the vibes of the two albums are similar enough to warrant that "sequel" or "accompanying piece" title.
Looming largely in mid-and-slower tempos, Morning Phase still largely deals with the feelings of heartbreak that inspired 2002's Sea Change, despite the fact that Beck is now happily married with two children. The lack of real-life inspiration doesn't make the music any less touching, however, as highlighted by the album's stellar lead single "Blue Moon."
So, why return to a sound from 12 years ago? Ever the changing artist, Beck didn't want to pigeonhole himself. "I was reticent about doing something in that vein again," Beck said in a recent interview with Billboard. "Does it kind of paint you into a certain corner? Because there's a lot of other stuff I want to do. I love going out performing and having songs where everybody's moving, letting loose. And this record, like 'Sea Change,' is a totally different, more intimate kind of thing."
But it's a solid return to form for Beck, with this being his first full-length effort since 2008's Modern Guilt and his first on Capitol Records.
