You can currently catch Brandy on Broadway as Roxie Hart, the starring role in Chicago. Two days ago (July 13), though, some lucky New Yorkers got to see her free of charge -- though they didn't even know it. The R&B singer recently went undercover in the NYC underground and treated subwaygoers to a rare aural treat. Surprisingly, they didn't seem too impressed...
Brandy entered the subway in a nondescript get-up -- a grey pullover, track pants, sunglasses and a backpack with a tennis racquet poking out. Once aboard, she broke out in song, beginning with "Home," a classic tune from another Broadway musical, The Wiz. She finishes triumphantly, though to no applause.
"Y'all thought that was cool?!" she demands of the silent subway car. No response.
Brandy, the actress that she is, acts flabbergasted, pretending to call her mom, before a fellow passenger reminds her there's no service underground.
She turns to the man behind her and asks, "Sir, what did you think of it?" Taken aback, he responds, "You gotta go up there and engage with the people. You're too much into yourself...You don't got a cold city. This is a warm city, ready to embrace you."
"We've seen this a million times. You gotta do something different." Warm or cold? You decide.
Brandy's cameraman got the whole thing on video, which she soon posted to her blog. The incident left her saying, "Can a sistah get ONE fan?!"
Next time you're on the metro, take a closer look.
Chicago is playing now through August 2. After she caps off her on-stage debut, Brandy will make a return to the small screen for Zoe Moon, a sitcom on BET that is set to premiere later this year. Both performances will likely win her a warmer reception than she got on the downtown 1 Train.
