American TV viewers may not be aware, but there was a British variety show that dominated UK culture from 1996 - 2000 called TFI Friday hosted by Chris Evans. The show is back, and for its debut revival show, Irish rockers U2 were on to perform "Raised By Wolves," "Vertigo," "Song For Someone" and "Out Of Control."
TFI Friday was back this summer for a one-off show featuring Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Roger Daltrey fronting The Who, according to Stereogum. The response to the show was positive enough that the British network decided to bring it back for a full season.
Working loosely off the model of The Late Show with David Letterman, TFI Friday served as a cultural hub for comedy and British rock music for those pivotal years in the late '90s. Now, only time will tell if the program ran revive that edginess it once had.
U2 brought a lot of energy to the stage as they opened with the Songs of Innocence tune, "Raised By Wolves," before being interviewed by the Evans family.
Evans' 5-year-old son congratulated the band on selling out its upcoming UK tour, but proceeded to ask the blunt question, "How much time do you think you've got?" Bono deflected the question to The Edge, who said he's a time traveler that knows immortality is invented in a mere 27 years. That odd exchange was followed by Evans' mother leading the crowd in a roaring rendition of Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" as well as U2's performance of "Vertigo," "Song For Someone" and "Out of Control" off of the band's 1980 debut album, Boy.
