Miley Cyrus' transformation into one of the freaks of the indie music world is nearly complete. After surprising the world with her collaboration with Wayne Coyne and other Flaming Lips members on Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz, the singer and The Flaming Lips are readying the kick-off of their US tour together and have since revealed that Dan Deacon will be joining them as the opening act.
Dan Deacon has been known to get dance parties started since beginning his career as an electro-acoustic producer and composer while in college. Now based out of Baltimore, where Deacon formed the arts collective Wham City, the singer/songwriter has released eight albums via a number of different labels, toured with artists like The Arcade Fire and Animal Collective and even gained some notoriety for his work as a contemporary classic composer. Whether playing a huge festival stage or an intimate college gym, Deacon often plays much of his set right in the middle of the crowd while leading listeners through creative dance-offs, conga lines and parachute games reminiscent of kindergarten gym class. After the release of his most recent album, Glass Riffer, Deacon turned the offices of NPR into an ecstatic mosh-pit for a "Tiny Desk Concert" appearance, which is well worth checking out.
Pitchfork reports that Deacon said, "I felt like I was in The Phantom Tollbooth when the offer to open the Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz tour came in, but I have a pretty weird life and tend to end up in really bizarre situations that I never in a million years would have pictured" in a statement regarding the tour announcement.
Believe it or not, joining the Dead Petz tour isn't Deacon's first meandering into the world of Cyrus: he remixed "We Can't Stop" in 2013 with what the artist calls a "50% reduction," meaning nothing was added to the track, only taken away. You can listen to Dan Deacon's reworking of "We Can't Stop" via Mabson below.
As Stereogum reports, there is "No word yet on whether Deacon will open Cyrus and the Lips' naked-and-covered-in-milk show." Check out the dates Deacon will be joining the Dead Petz tour as well as his upcoming solo dates, below.
