Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is Free to Download on Google Play Music

In case you've somehow lost your Thriller CD or your parent's vinyl is scratched, the Google Play store has you covered, offering up Michael Jackson's iconic album for free on the online marketplace.

From Nov. 20 - 27, U.S. residents can download the best selling album of all time from the Play Store to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the album, which Consequence Of Sound notes is an odd milestone to recognize; but hey -- free music is free music.

However, that term "free music" does seem somehow outdated when you could probably hear every hit from Thriller on YouTube in some capacity or find it for free on that wild thing called the Internet. But, the controlling powers that be have restricted streams of the album to some capacity. Non-paying users of Spotify can't access the album and, while YouTube has a myriad of copyright infringing knock-offs available, it's kind of nice not to have to sit through the litany of 2003 PowerPoint lyric videos.

In case you needed any more convincing of why it would be silly not to get this free album, here are some stats:

With more than 43 million copies sold, Thriller is the best selling album worldwide and the second best selling in the U.S. (behind a greatest hits collection from The Eagles) and as many would argue, one of the finest records ever made artistically. Obviously, with those kinds of sales, the album enjoyed a spot atop the Billboard 200 albums charts and it did so for 37 weeks, the second longest run in the history of the charts. Thriller spawned seven top 10 singles on the Hot 100, making him the first artist to ever rack up those kinds of numbers. If you extrapolate out beyond his achievements with Thriller, the numbers are even more dizzying. Check out this report from Billboard for more details.
