Jack White has operated his Third Man Records label since 2001 and now for the first time ever, the company will open its own vinyl pressing plant in White's hometown of Detroit -- the first the city has seen since the 1960s.
Aside from printing the label's own albums, Third Man are open minded when it comes to making their plant available to smaller and local acts. "Part of the concern in this world is that vinyl can very easily turn into an exclusionary thing... But this is going to make it easier for a little punk band to make 300 copies of a 7-inch," Ben Blackwell, the label's co-founder told Pitchfork.
There has yet to be any mention of when the new plant will make its grand opening but it will reside on 441 West Canfield Street, according to the Third Man official site.
Third Man Records has released material from White's The Raconteurs, The White Stripes and The Dead Weather, Third Man have also featured released from artists such as The Shins, Beck, Johnny Cash, Jack Johnson, Insane Clown Posse, Alabama Shakes and Seasick Steve since the label's initial launch over a decade ago. All music is made available to the public almost exclusively on vinyl.
Third Man's latest venture came in the form of a kids record player along with a glow-in-the-dark LP. Furthermore, the label boasts an purchasing option called "vinyl roulette" that allows consumers to choose a total of five 7" singles in order to receive a sixth record at random.
As for White, the "Seven Nation Army" singer returned to the music scene in September with The Dead Weather, putting forth their first studio album, Dodge and Burn, since 2010's Sea of Cowards. September proved to be a month filled with comebacks for the group as they also did their first live performance in five years, storming the stage on Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
