By now, we've all heard of (and possibly sampled) the pies known around the world from Ms. Patti LaBelle. These pies quickly sold out at Walmart locations as folks were anxious to see and taste if the singing legend's dessert was as sweet as her voice. And speaking of vocal awesomeness, it was the pipes of LaBelle superfan James Wright Chanel that had everyone going crazy for Patti's pies to begin with—so crazy, in fact, that the two signed up to do a cooking special on the Cooking Channel.
These pies were getting co-signed by celebrities including Jussie Smollett, and LaBelle and Chanel recently appeared on Steve Harvey to give the comedian a taste and talk about their new cooking special. Now, we've got a first look at the special, and we've got to admit, we're loving it so far!
The first clip shows the undeniable chemistry between Chanel and LaBelle (even their names rhyme), who LaBelle has referred to as family. ""He's such a larger than life person himself; he's like my new son," LaBelle said. "It's just a blessing when people come into your life like this and you're not expecting anything." Chanel is just as hilarious in the clip as he was in the video that made him and his high notes viral superstars.
The two have reportedly become great friends, bonding over their love of music and, of course, sweet potato pie. They even spent Thanksgiving together and were filmed slow dancing as Chanel serenaded his idol and LaBelle gripped both Chanel and her dinner knife at the same time.
"When she first called, it was like we'd known each other forever; we talked like we were best friends," Chanel told People magazine. "I told her, 'I have to tell my mom that Patti is my new momma too.' I said, 'Patti, you my momma!'"
And the two are reportedly taking their chemistry on the road: A concert performance is in the works! "We're going to perform in more ways than one," LaBelle explained. He can be my lead singer and I'll be his background singer." From the Cooking Channel to the stage: Not bad for a viral singer with a wicked sense of humor.
And if you haven't tasted one of LaBelle's pies quite yet, you're in luck: Not only are new shipments arriving just in time for Christmas, but, according to Walmart President & CEO Doug McMillon, the store will now be carrying the sweet treat all year. Now that's something to sing about!
