Jack White's second solo album Lazaretto is still over three weeks away, but before that drops, the former White Stripes frontman is asking you to have "Just One Drink." Today (May 16), White unveiled the third song from his new record, and it's a bit of a romper.
"Just One Drink" begins with some hard hitting, deep and fast guitar chords, setting the precident for this loud and fast number, albeit one with a comfy edge. Though White's music has always been heavily rooted in blues, this newly unveiled track brings in a different side of the genre, with nearly jolly piano chords underlying throughout the whole song, recalling classic Southern rock hits of the '70s.
White is a masterful songwriter, something that comes through in "Just One Drink," an ode to how a little bit of drinking can lead to a more comfortable love life.
"You drink water, I drink gasoline / One of us is happy, one of us is mean / I love you but honey, why don't you love me?" White sings at the start of the song.
Despite the torn lyrical emotions of "Just One Drink," this song is straight up a jolly fun time. Maybe it's the singsong melody, maybe it's the upbeat tempo or maybe it's those signature raucous guitars mixed with White's always wonderfully grating and strained vocals, but this is a boot-scootin' anthem for the ages.
