Two psychedelic masterminds -- Sean Lennon and Primus' Les Claypool -- have joined forces to form The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and today the duo released their first single, "Cricket and the Genie."
The announcement came along with the news of the not-so-surprising Bonnaroo 2016 lineup, which had mostly made the rounds before the official unveiling on Conan Tuesday night.
According to Consequence of Sound, the two Lennon and Claypool met when Lennon's Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger opened on tour for Primus and Dinosaur Jr. last summer. A few backstage jam sessions later and the two couldn't deny they had some chemistry.
"I realized that this fella had some chops," Claypool told Rolling Stone. "Primus was about to take some time off and I was gearing up a new project, so I asked Sean if he'd like to come to Rancho Relaxo and see if we couldn't get some interesting sounds on tape. Next thing I know he's staying in my guesthouse over the holidays and we're drinking vino, hunting mushrooms and throwing musical pasta at the walls."
The result is the glorious eight-minute monster the pair released today. Lennon has a hard time escaping his genetics -- he sounds just like dad John Lennon -- but on this track he draws from the experimental art of his mother, Yoko Ono. The song evokes that sense of '70s psychedelic rock, similar to Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger's output, but with Claypool on the track it becomes crunchier and then turns darkly mysterious, as if an opera could break out at any minute.
