It's not wholly uncommon for two songs to share the same name, there are only so many clever words and phrases in the English language after all. But what happens when two, totally unrelated songs share a title and someone decides to mash them up? The answer is... something awesome. Today (May 30), a mashup of Iggy Azalea's and Reba McEntire's separate singles "Fancy" hit the web, and it makes a lot more sense than it should.
Via Radio.com, the "Fancy" mashup features the original rapped vocals from Azalea's No. 1 hit single, but replaces that clunky, funky beat with the instrumentation from Reba's 1990 cover of Woodie Guthrie's "Fancy" from her album Rumor Has It. Reba also replaces original "Fancy" collaborator Charli XCX in the sung chorus.
The result is a hip-hop and country hybrid for the ages, and a slightly hilarious take on the soon-to-be summer classic.
Even over some twangy slide guitars, Azalea still sounds like a total badass in the mashed up "Fancy," and Reba's loud and proud vocals match the unbridled energy of XCX in the original version, even if Reba lacks a little bit of the sass necessary (though some sass is DEFINITELY present).
There's still an inherent groove in "Fancy," making the mashup somehow more danceable than the original, but both are rip-roaring good times.
Plus, country and rap can have a nice marriage in music. Last year, Florida Georgia Line and Nelly proved that with the smash hit "Cruise."
Regardless, judge for yourself and listen to "Fancy" the mashup below:
