Malay: Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' Follow-Up Could Be Released Next Month

Could a new Frank Ocean album be arriving as soon as next month? If his Channel Orange producer Malay is to be believed, the answer is a resounding yes.

In the wake of his work on Zayn's debut album Mind of Mine, Malay (real name: James Ho) spoke with Pitchfork about his work with the former One Direction singer, and in the process revealed some very important details about Ocean's forthcoming album.

And, if you were simply expecting a Channel Orange, Part 2, expect to be disappointed. In contrast to Ocean's hyper-focused Channel Orange sessions, this album is a little more laidback.

"A lot of the stuff on this new album was done with a handheld mic sitting in the control room," Malay revealed. "Frank's exploring different vibes completely on this album. I wouldn't say it's vocally looser but just his mentality; it doesn't seem as meticulous at certain times."

Ocean may be more relaxed mentally, but he still 100 percent does everything on his own terms, including deciding upon a release date. Though there were rumors that Ocean would release a project entitled Boys Don't Cry in July 2015, that date came and went without a new album. And fans will have to stay on their toes - the new album could potentially be out as soon as next month.

"I always tell people: When he's ready, the world is gonna get it. It could be tomorrow... well not tomorrow but maybe a month [laughs]. We've all been working hard. He's been working super hard. I feel like he's working harder than he's ever worked in his life. I'm excited for everyone to hear it. I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, for sure," Malay said.

Or, it could still be a while...

Ocean's last album Channel Orange was released in 2012.
